Darebin Neighbourhood Houses Food Relief Response for COVID-19

Since the beginning of COVID-19 we have been providing food relief to Darebin’s most vulnerable residents.

It started out as a partnership of Bridge Darebin, Reservoir Neighbourhood House and Rotary in Preston with the support of:

  • The other four Darebin neighbourhood houses: Jika Jika Community Centre, Span Community House, PRACE and Alphington Community Centre
  • City of Darebin
  • FareShare
  • Feed Appeal
  • Foodbank
  • Lentil as Anything
  • Northcote Bakeshop
  • The Office of Ged Kearney MP
  • Uber

We have provided emergency food relief in the form of:

  • cooked, frozen meals (meat, vegetarian, vegan)
  • hygiene packs
  • non-perishable pantry items
  • bread
  • fresh fruit and vegetables (when available)
  • dairy products (when available)

As at June 30 we have distributed:

9300 FareShare two-person meals

6,700 grocery bags (1,100 deliveries)

9 pallets of fruit and veg

9 pallets of dairy products

700 hygiene packs

and have supported 15 organisations every week to feed their communities.

What is happening now?

With the easing of restrictions some other relief organisations within Darebin were able to recommence their weekly services, which enabled us to spread the load. Bridge Darebin is still the central point for FareShare meal distribution to Darebin organisations supporting their own communities. Upwards of 600 meals per week are collected from FareShare Derrimut and distributed from our Preston site to the organisations in need.

In addition, we are providing between 80 to 100 grocery bags to Preston residents who are not Health Care Card holders and residents of some public housing estates, and rough-sleeper bags to local mental-health services.

How are we continuing this support?

Our GiveNow fundraiser raised around $16,000, and additional support from the Bennelong Foundation and a local philanthropist through Inner North Community foundation has given us funds which should see us be able to continue this support through to the end of August. We are reviewing the need on a weekly basis to determine ongoing need.

If you or anyone you know would still like to support our efforts, you can donate here, and all donations are fully tax-deductible.
